Ok, so, for the sake of testing the system to see how it all works, ive cheated my way into owning 2 - Angurvadal +5 -1D8+5, 1d4+1(Fire dmg) -THAC: 5+ Bonus -Speed Factor: 0 2 - Spectral Brand +5 -1D8+5, 1D6(Cold dmg) -THAC: 5+ Bonus -Speed Factor: 1 Now, my char has 5 points in LongSword, and as far as i can tell, Angurvadal is a LongSword and SpectralBrand is a Scimitar, So, that means that my stats should be ALOT better with the LongSword, right? The stats are about the same., but when i go into my stats with each set i get this: With the 2 - Angurvadal +5: MainHand THAC: 0 OffHand THAC: 4 NumberOfAttacks: 3 With the 2 - Spectral Brand +5: MainHand THAC: 4 OffHand THAC: 8 NumberOfAttacks: 2 So, Except the number of attacks, Everything is lower while im using the Angurvadal, even tho its a LongSword, and i have Five points in it. Can anyone explain this to me please? A lower thac0 is better in BG. The way it works is a d20 is rolled when you attack an enemy (called attack roll). If your attack roll is higher or equal to your THAC0 minus the enemy's AC, you hit. Note if you roll a 20 you hit no matter what.

If you roll a 1 you miss no matter what, and lose a round. An example: you have a THAC0 of 3. You attack an enemy of AC -2 (remember AC -10 is awesome, AC 10 is like wearing rags). You roll a d20 of 15. The numbers are compared: 15= THAC0-AC? 15=5 you hit. Heres how it works.

Say you have a sword of thaco + 1. Your thaco without the sword is 20, now its 19. Now say you have an axe with thaco+1 modifier. Also say you have a point of proficency in it (or two I forgot) which adds another +1 thaco bonus because your 'skilled' with axes. So thats +1 and another +1. Also say you have 18 strength, that adds another +1 to Thac0. So with the your sudden strength increase and you choosing the right weapon you bring your thac0 down from its base of 20 to 17.

Now you will have a higher chance of hitting the enemy. Damage is calculated with another formula im not so sure about. Yep, THAC0 is 'To Hit Armor Class 0'.

Cracked

So, if you have a THAC0 of 0, then you need to roll at least 0 (or higher) on a 20-sided die to hit a monster with an armor class of 0. In other words, you'll always hit.

Lower is better because you don't have to roll as high. I don't know if these rules were put into BG2, but in general 1 is a critical miss (regardless of your THAC0) and 20 is a critical hit (whether or not you could really hit the monster). Which means there's a 5% chance that you'll miss regardless of THAC0 and a 5% chance you'll hit regardless of THAC0.

So to figure out how likely you are to hit someone, you take THAC0 - AC (since a negative armor class is better). THAC0:4 - (-2 AC) = 6 THAC0:8 - (3 AC) = 5 THAC0:-2 - (-12 AC) = 10 Because of the confusion with THAC0, the third edition of D&D kicks it to the curb. As far as weapon speed, if you're able to attack more with the weapon you basically have more opportunities to hit the monster. I believe a lower speed allows more attacks. As for the damage delt, the number before the D is the number of dice and the number after is the sides of the dice.

So 1D8+5 is a number 1 to 8 with 5 added to it (or between 6 and 13 damage). When you add the fire it's 6-13 + 2-5 or 8-18.
